Streets down memory lane

It is very rare that anyone takes the trouble to look at the journey that is on… the concentration and the mind is consumed with thoughts of the destination and place, making plans and reviewing them and impatiently waiting for time to run.

Most of my journeys are no different as well… except this one. This happened one of my night bus journeys to Mantralayam (A town in Andhra Pradesh). It was a rickety old bus and the journey was rocky and pushy… so sleep evaded me for a long time and with music plugged to my ears, I got a beautiful glimpse of the moonlit streets of towns and villages and the journey inched forward.

Each twisting lane and street brought out a new experience, and I realized there is so much a journey teaches… that we tend to forget. Never did I realize that a road and the ‘way’ can add so much to a trip. There can be so much meaning, you see so many different pathways and routes… and within the country itself so much cultural difference.

Being from a metropolitan city, like Bengaluru, you generally have a very stereotypical idea of how villages and people living in villages are… while some of them are true, actually watching a village life and the streets unfold before you is quite different and refreshing in itself. The rickety road was soon forgotten and the lanes enthralled me further more. Village ladies smiling and carrying logs of firewood on their heads, children running down the lanes and waving at passing vehicles and people, jumping down small lakes, bullock grazing the grass lazily… The blistering sun and the warm hues of radiant

It all seemed so different, it felt as if I have gone back in time… never realized there is so much to this thing we call life, and many might not even have the opportunity to experience these unique elements of life.

Simple things like enjoying a beedi and cup of chai on the side of the street with group of friends… instead of grabbing a coffee and cigarette during a break, children running down narrow lanes with tyres and screaming and yelling… instead of playing a video game…

As clichéd as this might sound life seems to have lost its sheen and charm, and we do not even realize it… so next time you go on a trip somewhere, take the time to look the winding lanes and paths, you might see something memorable.
